Dog Training Class Descriptions

Puppy Pre-School - $150 (7 weeks)

This program is designed for puppies 12 weeks to 5 months of age. The ideal time to start training is before bad habits are formed, when young dogs are more receptive to learning new and different things. With the help of our socialization exercises, obstacle course, obedience exercises, and training games, puppies learn to be friendly, well-mannered members of your family. Preventive health advice and common puppy behaviors are also discussed during each session.

Class size is limited, with all household members encouraged to attend classes for the 7 weeks of training. Puppy Pre-School is an investment that will surely be rewarded with years of companionship with your pet.

This class is currently being offered on Monday evenings through The Family Companion. First week is orientation and registration without the dog, then the puppy is present for the remaining 6 weeks.

Family Companion Class - $150 (7 weeks)

This program is designed for the adolescent dog 5 months to 2-3 years of age, however any age dog may attend. Although a portion of our classes are set aside for traditional obedience training, what makes this program unique is the way we apply these exercises to practical household use. With fun and innovative lessons, we teach you to make the most of our classes while your dog is at home with your family. Problem behaviors commonly encountered with dogs of this age are also addressed.

We cover such exercises as:

  • how to get your dog’s attention
  • the “sit stay” & and “the down stay”
  • coming when called, each week adding time & and distance.
  • polite leash walking, as the dogs learns to focus on their handlers instead of the distractions in the environment
  • a greeting routine, to help prevent jumping on incoming guests
  • the “wait” command for better control around doorways, stairs and while crossing the street

It is the ideal class for establishing good manners and building a positive relationship with the family pet. The program runs a total of 7 weeks. Although the class size is limited, there is no limit on the amount of household members that attend.

This class is currently being offered through Family Companion. First week is orientation and registration without the dog, then the dog is present for the remaining 6 weeks.

Graduate Family Companion Class - $150 (7 weeks)

This program is designed for dogs that have successfully completed The Family Companion Class or similar approved program. The purpose of this class is to ensure that your dog is a respected member of the community, who is trained and conditioned to act mannerly in the home, in public places, and also in the presence of other dogs. During this class we will prepare your dog to take the American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen test, which is periodically offered at different locations in WNY.

Class exercises will focus on accepting a friendly stranger, sitting politely for petting, appearance and grooming, walking on a loose lead, walking through a crowd, sit, down and stay, coming when called, reacting to another dog, reacting to distraction, and supervised isolation. A CGC certification is a prerequisite prior to enrolling in the Pet Therapy Prep class.

This class is currently being offered through The Family Companion. The dog is present for all 7 weeks, including the first week of registration.

Urban CGC dog training Buffalo NY

AKC Community Canine - $150 (6 weeks)

AKC Community Canine is the advanced level of AKC's Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program. As with CGC, AKC Community Canine has a 10-step test of skills that dogs must pass to earn the official AKC Community Canine title. This is a title that appears on the dog's title record at AKC.

While CGC tests are simulations of real world skills, the goal of the AKC CGC is to test the dog's skills in a natural setting. For example, rather than the dog being tested in a ring, in the AKC CGC, the "walks through a crowd" test item will involve the dog walking through a real crowd at a dog show, on a busy sidewalk, in a therapy dog setting, or at a training club. We will be practicing and improving your skills, whatever level you are at to achieve these goals.
